{"id":31,"date":"2010-12-15T09:45:51","date_gmt":"2010-12-15T15:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wp.stage.cpanel.net\/2010\/12\/tips_when_applying_at_cpanel\/"},"modified":"2010-12-15T09:45:51","modified_gmt":"2010-12-15T15:45:51","slug":"tips_when_applying_at_cpanel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devel.www.cpanel.net\/blog\/tips-and-tricks\/tips_when_applying_at_cpanel\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips when applying at cPanel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I look at a lot of applicants here at cPanel and have some tips for would be job seekers.\u00a0 Many of these tips are generic and could help you get a job anywhere, but all of them will help you get a job here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Choose your resume format carefully.<\/strong>\u00a0 You worked hard to make your resume look the way you want it to; the format you send it in will ensure it looks that way when it is reviewed by a hiring manager.\u00a0 Submitting a .docx to a mac shop could be a problem.\u00a0 Sending in a .odt is troublesome because the formatting seems to get lost between different versions of OpenOffice.\u00a0 I recommend using a .pdf so your resume will be intact when reviewed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name your resume file something other than resume.pdf.<\/strong>\u00a0 Make your resume stand out and make sure it\u2019s not overwritten by another candidate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spell check everything!<\/strong>\u00a0 Recently I have received a few resumes where someone has trained the spell check misspelled words and they use them repeatedly \ud83d\ude41<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write a cover letter for each job you apply for.<\/strong>\u00a0 If you want the job, make the time to write the cover letter.\u00a0 Avoid using your rubber stamp cover letter from that one time you applied at NASA, re-read it and make sure it applies to the job you want.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t be coy when the salary question comes up.<\/strong>\u00a0 Remember you\u2019re not applying to be a rocket scientist or a brain surgeon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove ancient operating systems from your list of skills.<\/strong>\u00a0 Few people care if you are skilled with RedHat6 or WindowsNT.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Include the most recent versions you have worked with.\u00a0<\/strong> If you have installed RHEL6 or office 2011 put that out there.\u00a0 It shows you are out on the edge keeping up with things.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resumes are two pages at most.<\/strong>\u00a0 If you have a third page it had better impressive.\u00a0 If you saved your nobel prize in applied mathematics for the third page we\u2019re ok with that.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Never have a fourth page.<\/strong>\u00a0 If you have not convinced a hiring manager to want you in three pages you\u2019re not going to on a fourth page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t lie.\u00a0<\/strong> This one should be simple but avoid putting skills down that you don\u2019t have.\u00a0 Typically when a lie is uncovered in an interview you will be removed from consideration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I look at a lot of applicants here at cPanel and have some tips for would be job seekers.\u00a0 Many of these tips are generic and could help you get a job anywhere, but all of them will help you get a job here.
